"I thought I'd start off with a bang!  This is a shot of Basilica Di San Marco, for which the Piazza is named.  It's pretty interesting to sit in the shadow of this building for coffee and ice cream.  The Piazza is, without a doubt, the second most famous feature of Venice (first is obviously the canals!).  You'll see it again later."

"This is the hotel in which we stayed our Venetian days and nights.  It was...'quaint'.  I have no idea what the white blurring was.  Maybe a ghost?"

"This is the two of us in front of our room.  All of the hotel pictures were actually taken on the third or fourth day in Venice, since we were in no mood to take pictures while lugging a couple of hundred pounds of luggage through the streets of Venice.  Besides, don't you like the hair and haggard look on THIS day?"

"This was our cell for the week.  Notice the sconces and the chandelier (inset) are all Murano glass.   I guess you have to do such things for local flair, though there weren't any venetian blinds in the hotel.  What a ripoff!"

"The streets of Venice aren't so much streets as a bunch of interconnected alleyways.  Sure, you have the big thoroughfares and the walk along the Grand Canal, but for the most part, *this* is pretty much what you get.  Wave 'hi' to Becca!"

"I *told* you you'd see more of this.  This is the famous Piazza San Marco on our first day in Venice.  The canal is just to the right of the square on the other side of the bell tower.  If you want to hear the bells (Venice has a *LOT* of bells), you can click on 'menu' and choose a format."

"In case you were thinking of defacing the Piazza or the Basilica, perhaps you should take note of the automatic rifles the police carry with them on their rounds.   I don't know what this guy did, but I was glad I wasn't him."

"Everywhere you go in venice, there is a cat theme.  Many of the masks for Carnivale are catlike, and in nearly every shop, you'll find several catty art items.  I guess it's because of the city's icon being a lion (Becca thinks it's because of the pigeons in the square).  This particularly scruffy feline (he was even uglier up close) made his home in the Piazza.  He was just hanging out at one of the cafés."

"You'll notice the several pigeons hanging out near one of the fountains (and at least one Becca hanging with them).  This is nothing compared to the Piazza proper, where *thousands* of the birds pose picturesquely for the tourists.  Unfortunately, like everyone else in Venice, the birds are out to make a buck and charge too much, so I had to sneak a shot to catch a few in the background."

"This was what we came here to do.  We just sat around under the stars listening to the orchestra playing on the Piazza.  Oh, and we had ice cream...and coffee...and water."

"Venice is amazingly quiet in the early morning hours (not *too* early, but early enough).  In fact things don't start moving until 9:00am or later.  Here you see what gondolas do during their time off (ummm...nothing.)"

"Once again, Venice is eerily quiet in the morning.  This was taken about 6:30am.  It's hard to believe that the Piazza will be filled with thousands of people soon."

"At high tide you can see the water washing right up onto the walkway, and gurgling up through the drains into the Piazza.  Apparently, during the winter, the entire Piazza is under several inches of water.  In case you think this picture looks odd, it is.  It's actually two pictures (one of me and one of Becca) put together."

"Okay, there's no real trouble in the water, but I couldn't come up with a better title.  Anyway, here we are on one of Venice's many bridges.  You can't tell, but Ponte Dei Sosperi is behind us there, somewhere."

"Okay...so we picked these things up in one of the local groceries, and now we're addicted.  This poses a problem, as we ate our last two in Rome, and we can't find any more.  The problem will only get worse once we move on to Frogland.  Pay no attention to the fact that I'm eating them nekkid."
